President election: Opposition waiting for government consensus candidate

If the government does not propose a consensus candidate for presidential election the Opposition parties will put up a candidate, said CPI general secretary Sudhakar Reddy.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: If the government does not propose a consensus candidate for presidential election the Opposition parties will put up a candidate, said CPI general secretary Sudhakar Reddy. He said the Opposition parties are waiting for the government to propose a consensus candidate though it’s highly unlikely.

Even after measures like the demonetisation, Narendra Modi is winning because the secular forces are divided, said Sudhakar Reddy. “We gave an appeal to all political parties and intellectuals to unite in the fight against communal forces.

The presidential election is one such occasion. As many as 17 national and local political parties met in New Delhi on Friday. We have decided to put up a candidate if a consensus candidate is not proposed by the government,” he said.

Reddy said it was quite unlikely for such a proposal to come from the government. “The Left democratic secular forces, NGOs, individuals and writers should unite to fight the BJP and Sangh Parivar and defend the Constitution,” he said.
