THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A meeting of the Thiruvananthapuram District Development Council on Saturday decided not to allow unlicensed quarries and allied units to function.  MLA C K Hareendran told the meeting that quarries without proper safety mechanism will not be allowed to function.

Even though the government does not allow unlicensed quarries to function, certain loopholes in the law are being misused to run such units. In such cases, the government officers should strictly enforce the rules, the MLA added.

In the wake of the quarry mishap at Marayamuttom, the District Collector directed the Tahsildar and other officers to take necessary action.   

The meeting entrusted the Regional Transport Officer to find a solution to the frequent traffic snarl-ups near Medical College. A proposal to fix reflectors on the divider on Kesavadasapuram - Mannanthala road was also approved by the council.  MLAs K Muraleedharan, K S Sabarinadhan, representatives of other MLAs and MPs, Additional District  Magistrate John V Samuel, District Planning Officer V S Biju and officers from various departments participated in the meeting.

Close down quarries: CPM

The CPM has demanded to close down the quarries in Kunnathukal and Perumkadavila panchayats which are a threat to environment.   In a statement issued here, CPM district secretary Anavoor Nagappan said the authorities should take urgent measures to ensure that such incidents are not repeated in future.

Quarry, crusher unit owners’ meet on Dec 8

District Collector Dr K Vasuki has asked owners of quarries and crusher units in the district to participate in the meeting to be held on December 8 at the Collectorate. Along with the NOC and permit, quarry owners should file an affidavit on the safety measures implemented in their quarries and crusher units.
