Corp to collect cleaned, dried plastic waste daily

Residents of the capital city need not wait for plastic collection drive at intervals announced by Corporation to get rid of the plastic waste generated at home.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Residents of the capital city need not wait for plastic collection drive at intervals announced by Corporation to get rid of the plastic waste generated at home. It introduced a system of daily collection at designated centres centred around health circles. The only condition for collecting it is that the plastic should be clean and dry.

The Corporation announced a calendar for collecting other non-biodegradable waste. As per the schedule, used bags and footwear will be collected on third Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays of January, April, July and October. Glass waste will be collected on second Saturdays and Sundays of February, May, August and November.

Electronic waste will be collected in the first Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays of June and December. Biological materials, that takes more time to degrade, such as coconut shells, coconut husk, tree branches will be collected on every fourth Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays of a month. The Corporation has suspended its efforts to install aerobic bins at Poojappura after BJP councillors objected the move.
The Corporation officials said a decision regarding this would be taken after holding talks.

BJP councillors alleged the decision to install bins was without consulting people in the locality. Corporation had to call police as protestors blocked the aerobic installation on Wednesday.
