THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:The state government will soon initiate the necessary steps for introducing new sewerage system for coastal areas from Veli to Poonthura in the district, water resources minister Mathew T Thomas has informed the Assembly on Monday.

Though a sewerage treatment project for coastal areas from Veli to Poonthura, has been sanctioned under JNNURM (Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission), the project didn't materialise. Following stiff opposition from the locals, the city corporation was unable to acquire land for setting up a pump house within the deadline. Hence the project got lapse, the minister said.

Now with the time period for the JNNURM project got over, a new scheme should be introduced to address sewerage issue in the region. "A new project would be prepared and it would be implemented based on availability of funds," the minister said.

Earlier raising the issue through a submission in the House, former minister VS Sivakumar pointed out at the difficulties faced by the local population due to lack of sewerage treatment facilities. He also pointed at the need for addressing the pollution issue in Parvathy Puthanar in the city.
