THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: With rough seas battering coasts, more families in the district have been shifted to relief camps. According to the district administration, the damage from swell waves were more intense in Thiruvananthapuram and Chirayinkeezhu taluks, where 14 houses were partially damaged.

Around 120 families have been shifted. Meanwhile, the body of a 55-year-old man who went missing after getting caught in undercurrents of the Neyyar River on Friday was recovered.

According to District Collector K Gopalakrishnan, affected families have been shifted to relief camps, and more will be opened if the need arises. “Arrangements have been made to send supplies for those residing in camps, and officials have been given charge of camps,” said the Collector. VS Sivakumar, MLA,  said that the need of the hour is a permanent solution at containing rough seas and the damage ensued.

According to him, geo tubes laid on the coasts were found to be inept in controlling these swell waves and thus the government should be working on a war-footing in laying granites here. Sivakumar also added that the swell waves were battering the coasts at Vettukad, Veli and Shankumugham. He demanded the speedy completion of laying of groynes at Beemapally and Cheriyathura.

Six taluks in the district (Thiruvananthapuram, Neyyattinkara, Kattakada, Nedumangad, Chirayinkeezhu and Varkala) reported no untoward incidents related to the monsoon. Fire and Rescue Services Department added that incidents of uprooting of trees, electric poles, and traffic disruption were nearly rare.
