Vijayawada Mayor to streamline VMC garbage depot

Mayor Koneru Sreedhar called for an inquiry into irregularities that came to light at the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation vehicle depot.

VIJAYAWADA: Mayor Koneru Sreedhar on Thursday called for an inquiry into irregularities that came to light at the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) vehicle depot. It is learnt that over the months, batteries and other spare parts of garbage lifting vehicles are being stolen, causing much inconvenience for the civic body to shift the piled up garbage across the city.

In the council meeting held on Wednesday, several ruling TDP and opposition YSRC corporators complained about poor sanitation across the city. According to the VMC officials, the city generates 550 metric tonnes of municipal solid waste (MSW) per day. Of the total, the staff is managing to shift only 420 metric tonnes of MSW to the dumping yard at Pathapadu on the city suburbs.

With garbage being piled up at various localities, the incidence of seasonal diseases has become rampant at various housing colonies in the city. In this regard, Sreedhar directed the officials to prepare estimates for repairing the vehicles and also auctioning worn-out vehicles in the vehicle depot. “The issue of the lack of garbage lifting vehicles was brought to the notice of municipal administration department. Swachh Andhra Corporation has come forward to provide garbage lifting vehicles to the VMC. Soon, the poor sanitation issue in the city will be resolved” the Mayor said.
