Plan to set up music colleges in all dists

 The Department of Language and Culture of Andhra Pradesh is planning to establish Music colleges one in every district across the State.

VIJAYAWADA: The Department of Language and Culture of Andhra Pradesh is planning to establish Music colleges one in every district across the State. Also, the department is planning to impart cultural education to students in State government schools. As of now, across the State, there are only six music and dance colleges respectively in Vizianagaram, Vijayawada, Kurnool, Rajahmundry, Guntur and Nellore. By the next year, the department is aiming to bring one such college in each and every district of the State.

Currently in these colleges, over 10 courses are being taught in four-year certificate programme and two-year diploma programme. Courses include Violin, Vocal, Veena, Mridangam, Hindustani vocal, Hindustani Violin, Sitar, Kuchipudi, Bharatanatyam, Kathak, Harmonium, and Tabla etc.

Also apart from establishing new music and dance colleges across the State, the department is also trying to introduce cultural education to students studying in government schools. In this regard, the department had sent a proposal to the School Education Department early this year. On the other side, the School Education Department is also planning to introduce Kuchipudi classes for students of Classes 6-8. With the proposal from Department of Language and Culture, likely from the next academic year, the students in government schools would receive cultural education comprising of both music and dance based on the student’s choice.

Minister for Language and Culture, Bhuma Akhila Priya said, “We are actually planning to promote traditional culture in all educational institutions. For that we are closely working with the concerned department to introduce cultural education from the coming academic year.  Apart from this, we are coming up with more number of music and dance colleges.”
