VIJAYAWADA: In another two months, Krishna district will have four modern Anganwadis equipped with with excellent features for kids. Each of the four Anganwadis is being constructed at a cost of `10 lakh by the district administration. As the anganwadis are gearing to become pre-primary schools, the district administration is leaving no stone unturned to ensure better facilities at those centres. There are a total of 3,812 Anganwadis which will be converted to pre-primary schools in a phased manner.

“We have decided to construct four modern Anganwadis, one each for every revenue division on a pilot basis. They will be designed in such a manner that children will not only be safe but also feel comfortable. Apart from murals on the walls, there will a playpen for them to play. The little ones will play and learn at the same time,” district collector B Lakshmikantham told Express.

The construction works of the four Anganwadis have been grounded and two of them are expected to be ready by January end and the remaining two by February. “In the next phase, we are contemplating to have 16 more buildings, one each for 16 assembly constituency headquarters,” he said. Plans are afoot to construct similar models of Anganwadis in every mandal headquarter of the district and efforts are being made to rope in NRIs, MPs and MLAs and industries for funding and sponsoring them.

Out of the total 3,812 Anganwadis, only 2,600 have their own buildings and the remaining operate on rented premises. With the State government directing the district administration to have permanent buildings for Anganwadis, a massive drive has been taken up.  The district collector said they have decided to have permanent buildings for the remaining 1,212 Anganwadis in the next three years. “Our focus is on ensuring all the anganwadis in the district have five-star ratings. As of now, they are good enough to achieve three stars,” he said.
