VIJAYAWADA: YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) corporators in Vijayawada Municipal Council launched a two-day relay hunger strike at Dharna Chowk here on Thursday protesting against VMC’s effort to sell corporation properties to private players  in the name of revenue generation.

YSRC corporator and floor leader in VMC council B Punya Seela alleged that the ruling party corporators have utterly failed in addressing the problems of the residents. “How can VMC take up three star hotel construction works in the premises of the existing Municipal Guest House and hand over Swaraj Maidan to Chinese firms by converting the place to a commercial zone from the existing recreation zone,’’ she questioned.

The YSRC leader also took a dig at VMC officials for calling tenders to materialise the ‘City Square’ project in Swaraj Maidan. Already denizens are coping with inadequate open space and there is hardly any place for children to play and elders to walk around. She demanded the civic body to roll back its proposal of developing City Square at the place or else her party would stage massive agitations in the city.
