VIJAYAWADA: City police commissioner Gautam Sawang conducted Vanam- Manam as part of Police Commemoration week observed in Nalanda School at Pinnamaneni Polyclinic Road on Monday and explained the need for green cover in fighting against the growing levels of air pollution.

With the help of NGO Clean and Green Association, seeds were distributed among students to sow them in their residences and their surroundings.

Sawang interacted with students and explained the importance of trees in reducing  temperatures and pollution levels. He said the police department is conducting various campaigns across the city and advised students to plant at least five plants in their houses and surroundings. “Your role should not be confined to just planting a tree. A plant has to be nurtured by watering and provding tree gaurds to raise it,” said the commissioner.

The seeds of six rare varieties of fast growing plants were given to students. Earlier in August, seed balls were sprinkled in forest and hilly areas to increase the green cover with the help of a chopper as part of Vanam- Manam green project. Police also roped in NSS volunteers to throw seed balls in areas where a chopper cannot do the needful.

“Day temperatures will come down significantly if we increase green cover in our surroundings. Trees are the only source of pure oxygen and everyone should shoulder the responsibility of planting trees,” said Sawang.Kodali Chandrabose, chairman, Clean and Green Association said seeds of six types of rare trees were distributed among the students. which can survive in unnatural conditions.
