VIJAYAWADA:   The Taxpayers’ Association has demanded that the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) rollback notices served to bulk waste generators like hotels, restaurants, function halls and apartments making it mandatory for them to set up compost units on their premises for treatment of biodegradable waste rather than handing garbage over to sanitation staff.

In a press conference on Monday, association secretary MV Anjaneyulu said, “It’s the VMC’s duty to collect waste from households and other establishments and maintain hygiene in the city. The people pay the VMC for maintenance of sanitation in the form of conservancy tax, which is a part of house tax.”
The civic body collects ‘users charge’ from bulk waste generators and it has entrusted the task of maintaining sanitation to colony associations.

The association secretary found fault with the civic body’s decision to serve notices to bulk waste generators and termed the move ‘irresponsible’ and ‘anti-constitutional’. How can the civic body officials categorise apartments as ‘bulk waste generators’ when they collect property tax from the people residing in them?” Anjaneyulu asked.Association president V Sambi Reddy was also present at the press conference.
