Damaged civic body signposts in city pose challenge to pedestrians, motorists

VIJAYAWADA: Signboards put up in the city by the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC), in a bid to guide the pedestrians and the motorists alike, are in a bad shape at various locations, said a source in the corporation. Some of them are broken and others have been damaged by rust, causing much inconvenience to the public.

For instance, the signboards put up at Alluri Sitarama Raju statue near Food Junction, BRTS Road, Sarada College junction, Vastralatha Complex, One Town etc. to guide people, are in a real bad shape.
At many localities, private firms have pasted advertisement bills on government signboards, traffic signs and public buildings, without showing any civic sense and thereby preventing motorists from getting a clear sense of direction by reading the signs.

“Despite many representations, the administration and the police have not taken any substantive action against the violators,”said K Rajyalakshmi, a social activist. The authorities concerned should initiate stern action against the violators, who are mindlessly defacing the city, she said.

When this reporter contacted the VMC to find out what exactly the authority was doing to find a solution to this problem, an official said, ‘’We have already put up new signboards in some places with the support of the State Bank of India (SBI). There are still some old nameplates, which will be replaced soon’’.
