VIJAYAWADA: The Roads and Buildings (R&B) department officials have decided to speed up the Kanaka Durga flyover works and ensure completion of the project by March 2019, ahead of Assembly elections, to meet the deadline set by the State government.

However, the department told the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) to make structural changes to the recently developed F1H2O park and the vertical garden, as they are reportedly obstructing the progress of the ongoing construction works between Bhavanipuram and Head Water Works near Kanaka Durga Temple.

VMC had developed the garden and the park under the flyover at an estimated cost of `9 crore to enthral those who came to the city to witness the International Formula One Powerboat Racing Championship. The park, which also had swings for children, evoked a good response from the public after being inaugurated by Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on November 18. The CM had also lauded the civic body officials for taking up greenery works under the flyover.

When the events commenced the construction company was forced to halt works for around 15 days. After the events concluded, the R&B officials started the works again but realised that the park and the vertical garden may be damaged in the process of completing the construction. Speaking to TNIE on Wednesday, VMC additional director for Horticulture J Jyothi said the civic body is trying to come up with measures to protect the structures.
