Vijayawada: Five offenders held, Rs 17 lakh worth jewellery recovered

During interrogation, the accused admitted to their crimes.

VIJAYAWADA: Vijayawada police arrested five thieves, including three women, on Monday and recovered gold jewellery worth Rs 17 lakh from them.

Addressing a press conference on Monday, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP- Crimes) B Rajakumari said the accused were identified as Dwarakacharla Girija Kumari alias Girija (45), Devara Santha Kumari (40), Devara Suvartha (50), Natha Sudhakar (38) and Thota Yuva Sivanagaraju (20). The accused, who belong to three different gangs, have cases filed against them in the past. The police arrested them when they were roaming in a suspicious manner in the city.

During interrogation, the accused admitted to their crimes. From Girija, the police recovered gold ornaments worth Rs 6 lakh. “She hails from Sivapuram village of Prakasam district and committed several crimes in Nellore and Guntur districts and was arrested,” the DCP said.  

The police also recovered gold ornaments worth Rs 7 lakh from Santha Kumari and Suvartha, who were sisters. The duo robbed gold ornaments and bags from women by diverting their attention in crowded places.
