Musical chair: AIMIM shifts Mumtaz Khan to beat anti-incumbency factor

Mumtaz Ahmed Khan had first won from Yakutpura in 1994 under Majilis Bachao Tehreek(MBT) before skipping MBT and contested elections from an AIMIM ticket in 1999.

HYDERABAD: The gradual decrease of total votes garnered by former AIMIM Yakutpura MLA Mumtaz Ahmed Khan through the years coupled with anti-incumbency may be a reason behind him being fielded from Charminar Assembly constituency this year, indicates an analysis of data published on Election Commission of India website.

Nearly a month ago, All India Majilis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) announced its first list of candidates, wherein they retained the seven MLAs who had won the 2014, in the-then Andhra Pradesh Assembly elections. However, Mumtaz will now contest from Charminar segment.

Mumtaz Ahmed Khan had first won from Yakutpura in 1994 under Majilis Bachao Tehreek(MBT) before skipping MBT and contested elections from an AIMIM ticket in 1999.  According to data from ECI, in 2004, Mumtaz received 57.54 per cent of the total votes polled -- his best figures since 1994 -- in the constituency. In 2009, it decreased to 53.82 per cent and in 2014, it dipped down to 45.11 per cent. By fielding former Charminar MLA Syed Ahmed Pasha Qadri, who also happened to be a very close friend of late AIMIM supremo Sultan Salahuddin Owaisi, from Yakutpura, the party will be looking to improve the voting percentage and also quash the anti-incumbency from the constituency. In fact, Qadri has had an exemplary polling record in the past. Qadri contested and won from the Charminar constituency in 2004 when AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi, who was previously the sitting MLA from the constituency, vacated it to go and become the Hyderabad MP.

‘Funeral’ protest by residents against  AIMIM’s ‘land-grabbers’
HYDERABAD: After Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen workers allegedly encroached on their lands, residents of Madannapet resorted to ‘faith in Allah’ in order to get their properties back. In a unique show of outcry, the protest took the form of a funeral procession where the protestors were seen carrying a bed-like structure that read ‘Funeral procession against MIM’s injustice’ in Hindi. Meanwhile, the protestors cried out, ‘Ya Allah! Hamare ku jo sataake gaya, uska aise murda nikalo.’ (Dear Lord, the one who has tormented us like this, have his funeral procession look like this one) Speaking to express, one of the protestors said, “They have taken over our buildings illegally in many places.”

‘AIMIM chief and workers need a shadow police to keep them in check’
HYDERABAD: BJP’s Ponna Venkata Ramana has written to Telangana Chief Election Officer to arrange a shadow police team for MIM candidates and its chief Asaduddin Owaisi, as AIMIM is allegedly known to threaten common public during election season. “MIM candidates in Hyderabad in the earlier elections have threatened the common public with dire consequences. The local police are with the MIM during elections and do not register any complaint to higher authorities against their leaders,” wrote Ramana in his letter to the CEO. “Therefore I request you to kindly arrange Central police force in the Shadow team (sic) with MIM candidates and MP Asaduddin Owaisi.”
