The fashion fanatic

Poornima Indrajith on making style statements, multi-tasking and her soon-to-be-opened boutique Praana.

She is one actress who is known for her unique fashion statements. Be it the trendy skirts, the designer salwars or the lovely six yards, the lady has her own style code or rather the ‘Poornima touch’ to every fabric she wears. For Poornima Indrajith costume designing is more of a passion and presently the actress-cum-anchor is all set to start a boutique, Praana, to be opened in Kochi next month.

A costume freak right from her young days as she puts it, Poornima says designing has been her passion.

“Ninety per cent of what I and my kids wear are designed by me. I always wanted to go out-of-the -box, and bring that ‘wow’ factor to all my picks be it even the curtains or bed spreads. Very sadly our people buy expensive saris but never take an effort to  wear them gracefully. The beauty of any garment also counts on how you carry it off. Even the choice of that little bindi is important to bring complete perfection. At Praana we will aid our clients to have a balanced makeover,” says Poornima who adds that all the purchases for the store are handpicked by her from Delhi and Surat.

For the stitching counter, she has hired tailors from Orissa. The boutique store located at Panampilly Nagar will also be providing assistance for styling. The store will provide a complete package for the client including the dress, accessories, hairstyle, clutch bag and even matching sandals.

Poornima recollects the day when she first shared with her husband the idea of starting a business.

“I told Indran I wanted to put up a boutique store and the immediate reaction from him was ‘it’s an excellent idea Poornima, you can name it Praana’. I was literally shocked because I had only thought of the venture and here was my husband naming it already. But that is Indran and he adores the creative side of me. He always encouraged me to follow my passion and here I am doing exactly that,” she says. And how did he come up with a name like Praana? “Indran clubbed the first alphabets of our two daughters’ names Praarthana and Nakshathra,” she explains.

A model-turned-actress who is now a popular TV hostess through Kadha Ithuvere and Idavelayil in Mazhavil Manorama, Poornima says multi-tasking is her second nature.

“I don’t have a single idle hour in my day. Whatever trivial thing it be, I want to do it with complete dedication. This has made me extra choosy even when it comes to the dress I wear, the programmes I do or the films I commit.”

Poornima adds that despite all this family is her priority and she is not ready to risk it for anything.

“I leave home only when my daughters are out to school and I see to it that I am back before they return. Indran is also very particular about spending quality time with us. He wants the three of us around whenever he is home.”

And is this reason the actress bid adieu to big screen post marriage?

“I have never said goodbye to films, but at this point of time I can’t think of an important commitment as that. But if a promising offer comes to me in the future, I would take it up,” she says.
