14 Bollywood films that set box office on fire

Aamir Khan’s Dangal (2016) is still going strong at the box office as the movie has surpassed the lifetime collections of 2014 released PK (`340 crore) thus becoming the biggest Bollywood blockbuster.
It has become the fifth all-time grosser for Aamir Khan. This is a commendable achievement as Mr Perfectionist has delivered the all-time grosser within a span of eight years.

While box office has always been synonymous with Salman Khan, in reality it is Aamir Khan who started the 100, 200 and 300 crore club with Ghajini (2008), 3 Idiots (2009) and PK respectively. While most of the stars strive to deliver just one highest grossing film of all-time, Aamir Khan is miles ahead of his contemporaries by delivering five highest grossing films as compared to two by Salman Khan and one by  Shah Rukh Khan.

Kismat: 1943 
The blockbuster Kismat starring Ashok Kumar was the first Bollywood film to rake in over a crore. The record stood unchallenged for nearly six years.

MUGHAL E AZAM: 1960
The cult classic has lived on for nearly five decades and the songs are hummable even today. The Dilip Kumar film raked in `5.50 crore at the box office The film witnessed several re-runs in the 1960’s.

Barsaat: 1949
Raj Kapoor’s Barsaat collected `1.10 crore at the box office thus becoming the highest grosser of all time.

Maine Pyaar Kiya: 1989
This film marked the beginning of a new era in Indian cinema. Sooraj Barjatya directorial established Salman Khan as the ‘Prem’ of Bollywood and it surpassed the 14-year-old standing record of Sholay. It collected a little over `15 crore.

Dhoom 2
In 2006. the second instalment of YRF’s biggest franchise Dhoom set the box office on fire as the film surpassed the collections of Gadar by collecting `80.25 crore at the box office.

Aan: 1952
Dilip Kumar is one of India’s most successful superstars and with Aan, he managed to deliver his first ever blockbuster. It went on to collect nearly `1.50 crore.

Sree 420: 1955
Raj Kapoor delivered another highest grosser with Sree 420. The movie raked in two crore becoming the first film to attain the feat.

Mother India: 1957
Sunil Dutt–Nargis starrer Mother India gave a new dimension to the female characters in Bollywood films shattered all previous records by a huge margin. It collected four crore at the box office.

Sholay: 1975
The Amitabh-Dharmendra film broke the 15 year long standing record of Mughal-E-Azam by collecting nearly three times more than the record holder. 

Hum Aapke Hai Koun: 1994
Five years after Maine Pyaar Kiya came Hum Aapke Hai Koun! The movie was panned all across by the critics with majority of them labelling the film as ‘Shaadi Ki Cassette’.The Indian cinema is divided into two eras: Pre-Hum Aapke Hai Koun and Post-Hum Aapke Hai Koun. It shattered the previous record by a margin of 367%. It was the first to collect about `69 crore and the record stood unchallenged for seven years.

Gadar: 2001 
Sunny Deol was at the peak of his career in 2001 delivered the biggest blockbuster of all time with Gadar: Ek Prem Katha What makes this feat commendable is the fact that the film clashed with another hit film, Lagaan. Gadar collected around `75.50 crore.

Ghajini: 2008
The movie started the trend wherein success of the film was judged on the basis of the money the film earned. It collected `114 crore at the box office becoming the first to earn more than `100 crore .

3 Idiots: 2009
Just a year after Ghajini, came the modern day classic, 3 Idiots. The Christmas 2009 release collected over `200 crore at the box office and left each and every person in trade by shock. Although Salman Khan’s Ek Tha Tiger (2012) came close to the `200 crore mark, the record was eventually broken by Shah Rukh Khan’s Chennai Express (2013).

Dangal: 2016
The much anticipated film Dangal received few of the best reviews ever with a few labelling it the best film made in this century. It has set the box office on fire and has surpassed PK thereby becoming the highest grossing film of all time.
