Sukrutha Wagle is currently on the lookout for roles that can prove her versatility, but she is finding it hard, she says. "In an industry like Sandalwood, or for that matter any language, it's very rare for heroines to get roles where she can take centre stage so as to explore her diversity," she tells us.
Her upcoming film, Megha Alias Maggi, directed by Vishal Puttanna, releases this week. "In this film, the heroine plays the villain, and she is a tomboy. The film is all about her and her grudges, which is a very rare subject in the Kannada industry. It's difficult for a heroine to get an opportunity where she plays both the protagonist and the antagonist, and I happen to have got one such character. Besides that, the film was a low-budget one. The team was only looking forward to making a good film," she says.
Having started with a film like Jatta, Sukrutha believes that she was typecast as 'bold' with her very first role. Now, she can fit into only certain genres," she admits, adding, "In a way, this turned out to be an advantage, and one recent example of such a role is the one I play in Megha Alias Maggi. This is definitely a role every female character would want to take up once in her career."
The disadvantage is that Sukruta doesn't get to be part of commercial films. "I have not been offered girl-next-door kind of characters. Makers think twice before casting me in such films because they feel that I don't fit the bill. They also make decisions based on my roles in previous films. So filmmakers don't even think of calling me for auditions to see whether I can play such a character or not," she says.
Sukrutha says the phrase 'the grass is always greener' works in her case. "There are heroines who say that they wish to be part of films that I have done, and vice-versa," she says.
Pinning her hopes on Megha Alias Maggi, Sukrutha says, "There have been films that didn't do well, but I received critical acclaim for my performance. But at the end of day, it all depends on success of a film at the box office," she signs off.
