Mollywood ready for action anthology

They are gearing up to punch and stomp and shoot and throttle. Await a generous dose of heavy-duty action, perhaps the mother of all action flicks made in Malayalam. ‘D Company’, Indian cinema’s first action anthology, has Mollywood’s topnotch artists and technicians on board. The film features five unalloyed action segments and M-Town biggies, who have proved their panache for action, will be calling the shots for each. Joshiy, Shaji Kailas, M Padmakumar, Diphan and Vinod Vijayan will be wielding the megaphone for the project being made under the banner of D Cutz Film Company.

“The USP of the project is that five action directors are coming together for the first time. Then, ‘D Company’ also features a string of A-listers in the industry including Mohanlal, Dileep and Prithviraj,” says Vinod Vijayan, who is also one of the producers along with Seven Arts Mohan and Faizal Latheef.

Among the five, Padmakumar’s ‘Bolivian Diary 1995’, an ultimate game of cat-and-mouse, has completed filming. The film, set in a tribal habitat deep down the jungle, has Asif Ali, Samudrakani, Naran and Ananya in the cast. The film revolves around a Maoist leader (Samudrakani) who comes to Wayanadan forests to spread his doctrines. The leader nicknamed Chaukidar, is tailed by a north Indian police officer played by Naran (Aadukalam fame).  “Asif plays a tribal youth who initially gets fascinated by the enigmatic leader and later develops strong emotional ties with him,” says Padmakumar. The director also adds that though it comes under the action genre, ‘Bolivian Diary’ is no downright guns-and-growls tale. “It’s an action film in the sense that an element of suspense is retained throughout and the film is essentially a thriller. It doesn’t mean that the film is full of firearm fights and stunt sequences,” he says.

The second in the series is Diphan’s ‘Ganges of Vadakkumnathan’ for which Anoop Menon has penned the script. The film has a star-studded cast which includes Jayasurya, Anoop Menon, Fahad Fazil, Unni Mukundan and Murali Gopi. “It is basically a gangster movie and as the title suggests it deals with the gang wars in and around Thrissur. The filming will start by early August,” says Diphan.

Joshiy, who is known for his fetish for action, will direct the third in the series with Mohanlal playing the lead. Next will be the Shaji Kailas film starring Dileep followed by the Vinod Vijayan- Prithviraj film. All the 30-minute parts will be independent of each other. ‘D Company’ is slated for a Christmas release.
