Sejo John strikes the right chord in Malayalam

He comes from the world of divine hymns. Sejo John, the music director of ‘Mummy and Me’ and the upcoming ‘My Boss’ and ‘Houseful’, says he has always wished to begin his musical career in that way. The 28-year-old composer, who has also rendered a song in ‘My Boss’ has scored music for numerous albums and short films, as well.

Sejo, a graduate in vocal music who has associated with singers like K S Chithra, Benny Dayal, Kartik and Sayanora for his first movie, says that the experience was exciting. “Since I had interacted with singers like K S Chithra and M G Sreekumar for composing albums, I was at ease during the work. Yet, as music direction requires a lot of creative inputs, it has been challenging, too,” he says.

Turning back and speaking about his love for music, Sejo recollects, “Music has been there with me from childhood, and I grew up hearing my father singing and playing harmonium. As a disciple of music, I am more of a ‘jack-of-all-trades’ playing a bit of all including harmonium, veena and keyboard. I have many masters and I am still a student of music.”

During the last 10 years, Sejo has composed music for many Christian spiritual songs like, ‘Way to Cross’, ‘Creator’ and short films like ‘Bandwagon’, ‘Koottukari’ and ‘Zero Waste 100 Mark’. “It was a learning experience which gave me an opportunity to understand more about the nuances of music and associate with many distinguished singers,” he says.

Speaking on his entry to films, Sejo says, “It was through K Biju, the director of ‘Dr Love’, I got to know Jithu Joseph, the director of ‘Mummy and Me’. We got along well and that is how the songs happened.”

Though the songs of the movie faired well, the name of the music director is not much known, which Sejo explains, “I prefer to be known by the songs that I have composed.”

The songs of ‘My Boss’ are already getting popular. There are four songs including a melody, a fast number, a country folk song and a Hindi song. The Hindi song has been sung by Navraj Hans, the son of Iconic Punjabi sufi singer Hansraj Hans. Sejo says the experience of associating with him was ‘heart-whelming’. Other singers of the film are Kartik, Rahul Nambiar and Rimi Tomy.

Movies in pipeline for the talented youngster are ‘Houseful’ directed by Linson Antony, ‘On the Way’, a short film by newbie Priyan and the next project of Jithu Joseph.
