Cinema is a serious business, after all, says I V Sasi

Eighties saw only a couple of consistent hit-makers in Malayalam with I V Sasi being a prominent name among them. The veteran director, who ventured into silver screen with ‘Ulsavam’ in 1978, created many box office hits like Devasuram, Mrigaya, etc. Now, the ace filmmaker is gearing for a comeback through a Fahad-Dulquar film. “Sanjay-Bobby will be working on the script. More  details will be announced soon,” says the director.

Sasi and his wife had recently been in Kozhikode to attend ‘Ulsavam 2013’ a ceremony arranged to felicitate the director. “Definitely honours should reach the person when he is alive and I am touched by all this love,” says the director who has more than 150 films to his credit.

I V Sasi, who endured several setbacks from the industry post a few consecutive dull releases, says he is now very particular regarding his choices. “Usually with the conclusion of a shoot, I can foresee the fate of a movie and it’s needless to say I knew what was in store for Vellathooval and Balran v/s Tharadas.

He is one filmmaker who has worked with all the great Malayali script writers. “There was a time when Padmarajan-I V Sasi and T Damodaran-I V Sasi combinations created miracles in Malayalam industry. A successful movie requires an equally good script, no doubt,” he says.

As the chairman of latest State Film Award Committee, IV Sasi believes that the scene, as a whole, is very disappointing. “Among the 60 films that were screened only 20 per cent had any quality. These people should realise that cinema is after all a serious business,” says the director. While the director is busy planning his next, his wife feels small screen roles pamper an actor more than a big screen release. “The response of small screen audience is overwhelming.

Today, wherever I go people come and greet the ‘doctor amma’ in ‘Ammakkili’, not the yesteryear heroine Seema.

With both of them back in action is a Sasi-Seema combination likely to happen? “Why not? With my son Ani also in the field, I think it’s time, we plan a family movie,” says the director.
