Panning the life of the celebrity thief

Bunty Chor, which will hit the screens today, is based on the life of the notorious burglar

Ever heard about K Devinder Singh? Doesn’t ring a bell? Then his nickname is sure to grab anyone’s attention. Devinder Singh aka Bunty Chor who was in the headlines for many a month and who became a household name for Malayalis in the beginning of this year for committing a hi-tech burglary in the capital city will be robbing the silver screens from today. Debutant director Mathews Abraham’s mollywood flick with the same name of the notorious thief Bunty Chor is based on Devinder’s short but ‘colourful’ life in Kerala.

Ask the director what prompted him to take a film on Bunty Chor, he says, “He is a name familiar to even kids in Kerala. The furore he created here was filmy that had every elements fit for a movie.”

Earlier there was a Bollywood film portraying the notorious burglar’s life titled Oye Lucky Lucky Oye starring Abhay Deol. More about the movie, Mathews says, “The movie doesn’t deal with the whole life of Bunty Chor. It is completely on his escapades after he comes down to Kerala and his encounter with people of the state.”

In real life Bunty Chor was in spotlights for his several lucky escapes, a reality show and has to his credit more than 500 cases of burglary and theft. Ask the director how close the movie is related to reality, he says, “The movie is an interesting and humourous take of Bunty Chor’s life in Kerala. It has all the elements needed for a commercial film, like romance, drama, action and comedy. We have used the video footages of the real incident where Devinder had executed a heist in the house of an NRI businessman. To recreate some scenes of the robbery, the same house in Thiruvananthapuram has been used.”

Delhi based Malayali model Nixon C George, who hails from Kottayam, is essaying the titular role in the movie. The surprise element of the film is that the cash laden bag carried by Bunty gets misplaced in the city and the second half deals with how he tries to trace the bag. Other characters in the movie are Rathinirvedam fame Sreejith Vijay, Crocodile Lovestory fame Praveen Prem, Ajay Nataraj Kochupreman, Sashi Kalinga, Thesni Khan, Sreelatha Namboothiri and Biju Pappan. The story is by Shebi Chowagat and music by Ronnie Raphael. The film produced by Ruby Vijayan under the banner of Happy and Ruby Cinemas will hit the screens today.
