A family thriller from V M Vinu stable

Director V M Vinu is known to deal with family subjects. Be it his earlier hits, like Balettan (2003) or Vesham (2004), Vinu definitely knows what ticks amongst the family audience.

His next, Marupadi, too, is a family thriller that has Rahman and Bhama in lead roles. The story is about an innocent family who finds their lives turned upside down. Caught behind bars for a crime they didn’t commit, the family, in desperation, decides to take justice into their hands.
The film, shot entirely in Kolkatta, deals with a very contemporary topic, says the director. “The movie is a thriller as well as a clean entertainer. It follows the life of a family caught on the wrong side of justice. It is my reaction towards today’s world where the predators evade justice while the prey is being victimised. In Marupadi, this family is being victimised for a crime they didn’t commit. It is their desperation to escape that forms the crux of the story,” says the director.

Vinu adds that the movie is based on a real-life incident that happened in North India. “A similar incident provoked me to do a movie. Even otherwise, the movie has a strong message to the society. It is a portrayal of what happened in the cases of Nirbhaya and the Jisha incident at Perumbavoor. As a socially-committed artist, I wanted to tell the world about this through the powerful medium of movies,” says the director.

The movie is being scripted by Juliana Ashraf. “When she approached me with the subject, I was convinced that this story needs to be told. When she narrated the incident, there was a certain angst that only a mother can understand,” says Vinu.
The movie, that will hit the theatres on December 9, also has Santhosh Keezhatoor, Srinda, Anjali and Baby Nayantara in prominent roles. “Marupadi also marks the debut of Bengali actor Sudeep Mukherjee. He is a terrific actor who has earned a niche in theatre,” adds Vinu. The movie is being made by Daily Motion Pictures.

Daughter’s  singing debut
V M Vinu’s daughter Varsha Vinu, a PG student at Providence College, Kozhikode, makes her singing debut through Marupadi. The melodious number she crooned for the movie, ‘Melle Vannu poyi’.. has been composed by M Jayachandran and has already made it to the charts.
