Actress Sindhu blames usury gang for suicide bid

Kollywood supporting actress Sindhu, who recently attempted suicide by consuming sleeping pills in excess, has alleged that it was a kandhuvatti (usury) gang that forced her to take the extreme step.

Submitting a petition at the city police office on Tuesday seeking action against the gang, Sindhu said she was being intimidated by the gang, which was issuing her life threats, as she is currently unable to pay the interest levied by them.

“I’ve come to lodge the complaint directly after getting discharged from the hospital. The gang members even visited me at the hospital and said they would kill me if I did not pay back the amount with interest,” she told reporters before submitting the petition.

The actress had attempted suicide on Friday at her residence in Virugambakkam.

Sindhu claimed that she took the loan from five women belonging to a family in Purasawalkam about eight months ago for production of a film that was being directed by her brother. “I had paid an interest of Rs  90,000 per month for six months, which is more than the actual amount borrowed by me. For last two months I was not able to pay the interest after which they started threatening me. I was forced to take the loan after the co-producer of the film abandoned the film,” the actress said.

She alleged that the women had been repeatedly threatening her with acid attacks fearing which she attempted suicide.
