At the wheel: Ratan Tata

Born Ratan Naval Tata on 28 December 1937, he was chairman of the Tata Group from 1991-2012. He stepped down as the chairman on 28 December 2012 and now holds the position of Chairman Emeritus of the group which is an honorary and advisory position.

It is difficult to mention all his accomplishments, so we decided to pick the best. Tata Motors’ turning point was when Ratan Tata launched Indica, its first hatch, at the 1998 Delhi Auto Expo. It was a runaway success despite the hiccups and quality issues. He also outsourced all design work to I.DE.A, an Italian design house. But the most important accomplishment was the takeover of Jaguar Land Rover. He saw the potential in a product pipeline Ford had spent billions on developing before giving it away on a platter. Tata was instrumental in bringing the Fiat-Tata alliance in India . The companies parted ways but Tata Motors still uses Fiat engines. Tata’s dream to bring to Indians an affordable car came true when he launched the cheapest car in the world, the Nano.
