Karnataka bypolls results declared: Congress-JD(S) alliance wins 4 out of 5 seats; BJP retains Shivamogga

JDS and Congress manage to lead in four of the five constituencies, while BJP candidate BY Raghavendra manages to maintain lead over JDS candidate Mandhu Bangarappa in Shivamogga LS seat.

Coalition partners Congress and JD(S) won both the assembly constituencies — Ramanagaram and Jamkhandi — and two of the three Lok Sabha seats —Ballari and Mandya in the Karnataka byelections today.

Congress’ Anand Nayamagouda won Jamkhandi and Anitha Kumaraswamy of the JD(S) won Ramanagaram assembly constituencies. Anitha Kumaraswamy is Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy’s wife.

Congress’ VS Ugrappa won Ballari and JD(S)’s LR Shivaramegowda won Mandya Lok Sabha seats. While BJP’s BY Raghavendra, son of party chief BS Yeddyurappa, won Shivamogga parliamentary seat.

Congress takes huge lead in Ballari

Ballari might well turn out to be the biggest win for the Congress as its candidate VS Ugrappa increases his lead to 64,000 votes after the 4th round of counting concludes.

10 AM Update: Congress leads 4 seats, BJP leads in Shivamogga

At 10 am, with several rounds of counting completed across all five seats, the BJP has managed to maintain a slender lead only in Shivamogga with the JDS-Congress combine leading in all other seats. In Ballari, Congress candidate VS Ugrappa could very well pull off the largest win in the bypolls as his lead balloons to over 1 lakh votes.

JDS leads in Mandya

JDS Candidate Shivrame Gowda leads in Mandya by over 40,000 votes. Presently, Shivamogga is the BJP's only saving grace as BY Raghavendra leads by a small margin of around 6000 votes.

The Congress is now leading in 2 seats (Ballari and Jamkhandi) while the JDS is leading in Ramanagaram. Early trends suggest the BJP has a massive fight on its hands as it is trailing in 3 out of 5 seats that went to polls.

Shivamogga: BJP sees marginal lead

Initial trends suggest a marginal lead by BJP candidate B Y Raghavendra over coalition candidate Madhu Bangarappa.

Ramanagaram: Anitha Kumaraswamy polls 10, 241 votes

JDS candidate and wife of Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy, Anitha, has polled 10,241 votes. The contest in Ramanagaram is largely on paper as the trailing candidate, L Chandrashekar of the BJP, had retired from the contest and joined the Congress. He has polled 1811 votes so far out of 28 booths in 2 rounds of voting.

Ballari: Congress' Ugrappa leads

Ballari: Congress candidate VS Ugrappa's lead over J Shanta of the BJP grows to 31138. Ugrappa after two rounds of counting in 224 out of 1901 booths, has 74668 votes compared to 43530 for Shanta. Around 875 votes have been cast under the 'NOTA' option.

Though the Congress-JD(S) alliance is sure of winning the Mandya parliamentary seat, the BJP hopes to gain its vote share. An increase in vote share is all that the party needs to boost the cadre and capitalise on the infighting with the Congress-JD(S) workers in the run up to the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

In the Vokkaliga bastion of Mandya, JD(S)’s L R Shivarame Gowda, is pitted against a fresh face in Dr Siddaramaiah from the BJP.
