Here are the robots that have been everything from the heros to the sidekicks in movies that made us look up and admire AI.

C-3PO & R2-D2: Star Wars

In movie vernacular about robots, none are more iconic than this duo. The C-3PO & R2-D2 are perhaps the most famous droids. The robots mostly act as a comic relief with the C-3PO doing all the talking, as it is fluent in over six million forms of communication.

T101 and T1000: The Terminator

Is artificial intelligence taking over the world? Well, The Terminator  franchise should be credited for bringing it to popular attention. The T101 and T1000 both were sent to the present from the future for rendevous with John Connor—one to save him and the other to terminate him. The highly choreographed fights are epic and although the T1000 is much more advanced than the T101, the latter saves the day with a bit of heart.

Sonny: I, Robot

I, Robot posed questions about the control robots can have over man and also their impact. Sonny, a robot with advanced human-like functionalities, has also been programmed to feel. It is this character that differentiates it from other robots. Not limited by the Three Laws of Robotics, Sonny decides to reveal a robotics company’s hidden agenda.

WALL-E

Then there is WALL-E. The earth is left to trash compactor robots called WALL-Es to clean up the planet as the earth becomes uninhabitable for humans. All the robots become inactive except for one. WALL-E manages to keep himself in operation. And in a human fashion, WALL-E falls for EVE.

Transformers

The Transformers movies showed us cool robots living among us disguised as even cooler cars. The automobile-to-robot-car transformation itself is enough to pump our heart valves. And a whole planet of them? Let’s send a rover there, we say.

Chitti: Enthiran

Who can forget Chitti, our desi robot? Played by Rajinikanth, Chitti is a sophisticated android robot, which is taught about feelings through reverse mapping. This allows Chitti to understand emotions and also respond through them. Later, it turns evil and ends in a lot of robot-human mush.
