President Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Thursday greeted people on the occasion of Eid and said the festival infuses a sense of brotherhood and joy.

"I extend my greetings and best wishes to my fellow citizens on the auspicious occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr," Mukherjee said in his message.

"Eid-ul-Fitr marks the culmination of the period of fasting and prayer during the holy month of Ramadan, and infuses in us a sense of brotherhood and spirit of joy," he said.

"May Eid-ul-Fitr instill a sense of the essential unity of all faiths and pride in the composite culture of India."

Vice President Hamid Ansari said: "The festival celebrated with gaiety and piety all across the country reinforces the timeless message of universal brotherhood, love and compassion."

Manmohan Singh said Eid, which marks the culmination of the holy month of Ramadan, was a celebration of the spirit of sharing and brotherhood.
