According to National Crime Records Bureau, incidents of rape reported in Mumbai in 2012 were second to Delhi. The two cities together accounted for 817 of the total rapes in the country, approximately 5 times the combined total of Chennai and Kolkata.

For five consecutive years, from 2012 to 2008, Delhi and Mumbai have remained the most unsafe Metros. An average of 450 rape cases are reported in Delhi every year, while in Mumbai it is 210.
Incidents of rape have been on the rise in all the four Metros from 2008-12. In the capital, cases have almost gone up by 21% from 2011-12, highest for any city in a given year.
