Muzaffarnagar riots: Arrest warrants against politicians

A court in Uttar Pradesh has issued a series of non-bailable arrest warrants against BJP, Congress and BSP politicians for inciting violence in Muzaffarnagar, that killed at least 50 people.

Arrest warrants were issued against Qadir Rana, Jameel Ahmed and Noor Salim Rana of BSP, Saedduzzaman of Congress and Sangeet Som of the BJP.

Action will be taken against them in two days, Senior Superintendent of Police Praveen Kumar said.

"We have arrested three to four politicians. We have collected some evidence...some more evidence is to be collected and very soon will be arrested. Whoever is guilty will be arrested in two days...this is subject to investigation," he said.

They are wanted for violating prohibitory orders and provoking communal tension by inflammatory speeches in different meetings (mahapanchayats) in the district, police said.

Ten police teams have been rushed to arrest those against whom warrants have been issued, a senior official said.

Yesterday, former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Uma Bharti was not allowed to visit the riot-hit areas.

A special cell was formed on the instructions of the UP government. Close to 1,700 arms licences have been cancelled in the area since the riots erupted and notice issued to 5,000 other arms license holders, the DM said.

A total of 7,198 people from 4,729 families are at present living in 41 relief camps set up by the administration, he said, adding the problem has largely been witnessed in 32 villages of Muzaffarnagar.
