BJP hails Lalu Prasad's conviction

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Monday hailed Rashtriya Janata Dal chief Lalu Prasad's conviction in Ranchi in a fodder scam case, saying it was a day of justice for the people of Bihar.

"It is a historic judgment and a justice day for the 10 crore people of Bihar," BJP leader Rajiv Pratap Rudy said.

He said although justice was delayed, this was an important decision.

"We welcome the verdict. We believe Lalu Prasad was saving himself since the last 10 years by political compromises with the UPA (United Progressive Alliance)," he said.

He also questioned if a similar verdict will come in other scam cases.

"We wonder, after this historic judgment, would a similar judgment come in the 2G scam, CWG (Commonwealth Games, 2010), coal scam (alleged fraudulence in allocation of coal blocks), and railgate (the Rs.10 crore railway bribery case in which former railway minister Pawan Bansal's nephew is sn accused)," Rudy said.

Lalu Prasad was convicted Monday by a Special Central Bureau of Investigation court in Ranchi, along with over 44 others, of fraudulently withdrawing Rs.37.70 crore from the Chaibasa district treasury. Chaibasa, then in Bihar, is now in Jharkhand after the state was carved in 2000.
