After Speaker's Rebuke, Trinamool MP Says Sorry

NEW DELHI: The disorderly conduct of Lok Sabha members in the House on Wednesday invited sharp criticism from Speaker Sumitra Mahajan, who pulled up unruly lawmakers for creating a noisy scene and disrespecting the Chair by telling her that she was “not the speaker of Narendra Modi”.

A visibly hurt Mahajan said the disruption and unparliamentary behaviour of some MPs was truly unfortunate. “I’m hurt due to disorderly conduct of members for the last few days,” she said. Mahajan’s strong criticism of members’ conduct came after the House resumed at noon following disruption caused by Trinamool Congress members during Question Hour.

Earlier, protesting against the government, TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee shouted slogans, telling the Speaker “you are not Speaker of BJP, you are not the Speaker of Narendra Modi”. The NDA strongly objected to Banerjee’s comment leading to adjournment of the House.

When the House was reconvened and after the Speaker’s comments, Banerjee apologised to her, saying he was “sorry for hurting” her sentiments. However, Mahajan told him it was not her personal sentiment he tried to hurt but that of Chair of the House.
