Badaun Case: Medical Board to Meet this Week

NEW DELHI: The medical board constituted by CBI in connection with its probe in the alleged rape and murder of two teenaged girls in Badaun, Uttar Pradesh will hold its first meeting this week where it will decide on conducting fresh autopsy of the victims.

CBI sources, without revealing the identity of the doctors, said the three-member panel of doctors posted here at Central Government hospitals will meet this week where a decision on moving ahead with the probe will be taken.

The sources said members of the panel will go through autopsy done by the local doctor and take a call whether to exhume the bodies and do fresh autopsy.

They said the post-mortem report of the victims was "vague" and did not clearly specify whether they were raped or not.

Highly-placed sources in the agency said the first post- mortem was conducted at night, which is usually against laid down procedures. Post-mortem is not conducted after sunset except in an exceptional emergency cases.

Director General of Uttar Pradesh Police A L Banerjee had also raised questions about the incident. He had claimed the rape of one of the victims was not confirmed while suggesting that property could be one of the motives behind the crime.

The sources said the board has been constituted to review the findings and proceed with the process of fresh autopsy if needed.

The two cousins, aged 14 and 15, went missing from their house on the night of May 27 and their bodies were found hanging from a tree in the village in Ushait area the next day. The incident had sparked a nationwide outrage.

CBI has subjected four persons--fathers of two victims, a relative of the family and an eye witness--through lie-detector test as the agency is not convinced with the statements given by them.

The sources said the chain of events given by the eye-witness has many loopholes which need to clarified before reaching any conclusion. They said the statement also lacks consistency.
