Twelve Policemen Suspended as Undertrials Escape From Court

Twelve policemen, including an Assistant Sub-Inspector, were suspended in connection with the escape of two undertrial prisoners, including a hardcore Maoist, who was serving life sentence from court premises in Ghatsila, around 45 kms from here, a senior police officer said today.

Twelve policemen, including an ASI, who were on duty, were suspended following the incident yesterday, Superintendent of Police (rural) Shailendra Kumar Sinha said.

Sinha said massive raids were being conducted to apprehend the escapees.

A CPI (Maoist) activist Phogra Munda, who was serving a life sentence in a murder case and against whom several cases were pending in various police stations in naxal-hit Ghatsila sub-division, and another undertrial Hopna Baske managed to escape from the court premises while they were being taken back to jail following their production in the court on Monday.

Police, however, arrested another naxal, Salai Karma, who was also trying to flee along with them.
