Dhoni Comes Under Fire

The Supreme Court, in a move that will shake up the Indian cricket establishment, proposed that BCCI president N Srinivasan be replaced with former cricketer Sunil Gavaskar and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) along with Rajasthan Royals (RR) be barred from IPL 7 till it decides the case of betting and spot fixing scandal.

Harish Salve attacked India captain Mahinder Singh Dhoni, accusing him of being “guilty of corrupt practice” by lying before the Mudgal Committee on the role of the BCCI President’s son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan in CSK. Salve took the court through the material pointing to how the activities of Meiyappan were sought to be camouflaged behind the cover of him being a ‘cricket enthusiast’. He said efforts were made to erase his other activities when lid was blown off.

As the court inquired if Chennai Super Kings would be playing in the current edition of IPL, Salve urged the court to suspend the team. “It has to be suspended, as under BCCI code, an act of corruption is any act of omission,” he pointed out.

The court made the proposal when it took up the Mudgal Committtee’s report into the alleged betting and spot fixing during last year’s IPL.
