PATNA: In the second incident of its kind in less than a month, three Bihar youths listening to music and watching films on their mobile phones with earplugs stuck in their ears were killed by being run over by a train as they sat on the railway tracks, police said on Tuesday.
Two teenage girls were killed on the rail tracks in a similar fashion in the state on November 19.
“Two of the three teenager boys were immediately killed on the spot while the third one, who was left badly injured, died today,” said government railway police (GRP) official NK Singh about the tragic incident that took place at Donar, close to the district headquarters town of Darbhanga in north Bihar on Monday night. The three youths were identified as Mohammad Sohail and Mohammad Shabbir, who died on the spot, and their friend Mohammad Shabbir, who passed away at a local hospital on Tuesday evening.
The three teenagers were friends and had been enjoying the evening together while braving the deadly winter chill close to the railway tracks, said eye-witnesses. “As they sat together on the tracks
some 2 km from Darbhanga and were engrossed in listening to music, they could not sense the approaching sound and horn of the Samastipur-Darbhanga passenger train coming on the tracks their way. The train crushed them,” said Neeraj
Kumar, an eye-witness.
Police officials said it was possible that the train driver could not see the three teenagers sitting on the tracks due to the thick fog. Many trains have been running late across Bihar due to foggy conditions in the past three days.
“The three boys’ families are extremely saddened. Police have registered a case and are investigating the deaths,” said Ganga Sagar Singh, the block development officer of Darbhanga Sadar.
