MUMBAI: Indian Dental Association’s Sushruta Award for Oral Health Care was conferred on Justice K Narayana Kurup here on Friday at the hands of union minister for health and family welfare J P Nadda.
This is the second such award and is being conferred on Justice Kurup for his outstanding contributions in the field of tobacco control spanning over three decades, Dr. Alias Thomas, past president of the association said here in a statement.
Justice Kurup who was former Judge of Kerala and Madras High Court and chairman of state police complaints authority of Kerala had intensified his campaign against tobacco after his retirement in 2001. Justice Kurup has received several awards and honor for his campaign against tobacco, that has covered over 33 million people in Kerala.
Justice Kurup has created a sea-change in the attitude of the people towards tobacco and the number of tobacco users has dwindled, said Dr Ashok Dhoble, honorary secretary general of IDA.
