NEW DELHI: In a veiled attack on the Opposition, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday, while talking about the “loss of values” in society, said that there were some people who were openly supporting black money and corruption.

The Prime Minister was speaking after launching the book on the life and works for former Goa governor and senior BJP leader Kedar Nathi Sahini. “Earlier, people used to be shy about cheating. Afterwards, they brazenly began cheating in the examinations. But now we have a situation where some people come out in the open to support black money and corruption. They make speeches and raise slogans,” Modi said.

The prime minister made a passing reference to the demonetisation decision during his speech. The packed audience at the auditorium consisting of the BJP leaders and workers gave a standing ovation to the Prime Minister, besides raising slogans to hail him. The prime minister also asked the people to rate the decision on demonetisation on a mobile app.

Modi got lavish praise from the RSS on the occasion, with the general secretary of the ideological mentor of the BJP telling people that “had Sahini ji been alive, he would have seen the India of his dream under the leadership of Narendra Modi”.

Also on Tuesday, the BJP’s parliamentary party passed a resolution commending Modi for his “historic, revolutionary, daring and pro-poor decision taken in the national interest”. It hailed demonetisation as a national project of cleansing the system that will usher in behavioural and attitudinal changes encouraging honesty, particularly in political life.

Condemning “malicious” efforts of rival parties, the resolution alleged that they are desperate to provoke violence and chaos as they have been “rattled” by people’s wide support to the decision and urged the Prime Minister to call for other effective measures to clean up the system. They are bent upon disrupting the proceedings of Parliament on one pretext or the other, it alleged, targeting the opposition.

Speaking at the meeting, BJP president said that it’s using black money that terrorists, Naxals, drug mafias and counterfeiters used to operate and that the prime minister had, “with one stroke of a pen, turned their black moneystashes into scrap”.
