NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Monday issued notice to Centre on an appeal filed against the National Green Tribunal order and stated that the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) clearance was granted to Units 3, 4, 5 and 6 of the Koodankulam Nuclear Power Project without proper environment impact assessment.

A Bench of Justices Madan B Lokur and Deepak Gupta sought a response from Tamil Nadu government and Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd on an appeal filed on behalf of activist G Sundarrajan of Poovulagin Nanbargal.

Advocate Prashant Bhushan appeared on behalf of the petitioner and argued that the mandatory Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for the said units has been done by an unaccredited agency Engineers India Ltd and stated that there was a non-application of mind in granting of the CRZ clearance.

Bhushan submitted the earlier judgment was only on Units 1 and 2 of the project and that in that matter, the CRZ clearance given to units 3 to 6 was not under challenge and needs to be scrutinised afresh.
