MUMBAI: Pune police have arrested a professor who is accused of demanding sexual favors from a 31-year-old Iranian Ph.D. student.

He has been remanded in police custody for two days.

The woman said the professor groped her and touched her inappropriately. He also demanded sexual favors from her in exchange for facilitating her admission to his college as a Ph.D. student.

The victim wanted to pursue Ph.D. in accountancy. She had been searching for an academician who could guide her when she met Prof. Borhade, a few months back.

He made her visit him several times under the pretext of correcting the mistakes in her thesis.

However, during their meeting last week, he told her that his college has only one seat and for which there are two candidates.

He suggested that she should meet him on Tuesday when he would try to solve the problem.

When she met him on Tuesday, he was alone in his cabin. He assured her that she will get the admission if she agrees to do certain things. He then made sexual advances and demanded sexual favors from her, which she refused and left his cabin, said inspector Phuge.

The victim, who is not well-versed in English has a habit of recording all her conversations so that she could listen to them later. She handed over to the police, the audio clip of her conversation with the professor, making it easier for them to nab him, Phuge said.

Pune is a favorite destination for foreign students who come to India for higher education. By one account, the city hosts as much as 40 per cent of the foreign students who come to India for higher studies.
