NEW DELHI: Senior advocate Indira Jaising on Friday posted on Twitter that she will shed her senior gown after this year’s Independence Day and termed it as ‘gown wapasi’.

Indira Jaising, whose petition challenging the process of senior designations across the country is pending before the Supreme Court, called it a symbol of discrimination.

On Thursday, a three judge bench had begun hearing the case and slated the next hearing on August 29.
Jaising was the first woman who was designated as senior counsel by the Bombay High Court.

In another tweet she said, “Why do we need two classes of lawyers with different uniform?”

During the hearing on Thursday, attorney general K K Venugopal told the bench that there was no thumb rule and many non-senior advocates were equally good.

Jaising said the current procedure is discriminatory in nature and it should be discarded in favour of a more transparent system.
