The much-awaited booking of Reliance's zero-cost JioPhone has finally opened today after initial hiccups with the company website that saw users complaining of crashes and the inability to access the booking feature.

Marking Reliance Industries Ltd’s 40th anniversary, its chairman Mukesh D Ambani on 22nd of July announced the launch of an ‘effectively free’ 4G phone, hoping to scoop up a sizeable 500 million bottom-of-the-pyramid market. The handset is priced at Rs zero; subscribers, however, have to plonk down a refundable deposit of Rs 1,500.

What does it offer

With free voice calls being the new normal, Jio sweetened the deal offering unlimited data for  Rs 153 per month — or one-thirtieth of the existing tariffs. For the budget-minded, weekly or two-day packs start as low as 24 bucks are available.

Jio also provides a weekly plan for Rs. 53 and a two-day plan for Rs 23.

How to pre book

The customers interested in booking the Jio phone can visit Jio outlets near to them and can also book the phone through My Jio app and Jio.com.

JioPhone specifications

  • Two-megapixel rear camera and a front VGA camera
  • 512 MB RAM and 4 GB internal storage (expandable to 128 GB)
  • 2,000 mAh battery
  • 2.4 inch screen

Pre-booking price

The phone can be pre booked for an amount of amount of Rs 500 while the balance security deposit amount of Rs 1000 is to be paid at the time of delivery of the Jio phone. The phone can be used for 36 months after which upon returning the phone the security deposit of 1500 will be returned back to the customer.
