GUWAHATI: Assam’s additional advocate general Debajit Saikia landed in trouble by taking a selfie in the Legislative Assembly while seated in the speaker’s gallery and then posting it on his Facebook page.

The incident came just days after an All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) MLA, Aminul Islam, was suspended by speaker Hitendra Nath Goswami for three days for going live on Facebook from the Assembly. Aminul Islam had used his mobile phone to record and broadcast his speech Facebook on February 3.

The AIUDF urged the speaker to take action against Debajit Saikia as was done against Aminul Islam.

“The speaker suspended our MLA for uploading a video of his speech in the Assembly on Facebook. We accepted and supported his action. We feel that the additional advocate general's action too was in violation of Assembly rules and procedures,” the AIDUF said.

Speaker Hitendra Nath Goswami said he was yet to receive a formal complaint about the selfie taken by Saikia and promised to pursue the matter when he received one.

“I only heard it in the media. As per rules, nobody is allowed to take mobile phones inside the Assembly during a session,” Goswami said.
