CBI nabs key accused in IAS bribery case from Hyderabad

The CBI said the arrested accused will be produced before the Special Judge, CBI Cases, Patiala House Courts here on Thursday.

NEW DELHI: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Wednesday arrested Burhanuddin, a private person hailing from Hyderabad in connection with an ongoing bribery case relating to the arrest of senior IAS officer from Chhattisgarh.

“A cash amount of Rs.35.5 lakh (approx) and half Kg of gold jewellery (approx) was recovered during the search at the residential premises of said accused person at Hyderabad. Earlier, he was absconding and also did not join the investigation. After concerted efforts, he was traced from Hyderabad,” the CBI said in a statement here.

The CBI said the arrested accused will be produced before the Special Judge, CBI Cases, Patiala House Courts here on Thursday.

The CBI had registered a case on February 18 against Principal Secretary (IAS-1988 batch), Chhattisgarh Government: B L Agrawal  and two other persons in connection with the bribery case relating to settling of a pending CBI case against the senior IAS officer.

Burhanuddin allegedly claimed to be a senior official in the PMO and offered Agrawal that his pending case with the CBI would be settled. Agrawal had agreed to pay Rs 1.5 crore as bribe to Burhanuddin through another conduit.

Till now, the CBI has recovered bribe amount of about Rs.91.9 lakh and 3.5 kg. of gold during the searches conducted against the accused persons.
