AAIB to probe Jet Airways flight accident in Goa

The committee, headed by AAIB's deputy director R S Passi, has been asked to submit its report within six months, according to government notification issued this week.

NEW DELHI: The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) has started probe into the Jet Airways aircraft incident at Goa airport in which 15 passengers were injured after the Boeing 737 plane skidded off the runway last month.

The AAIB has formed a three-member committee which would probe into the incident, said an official. The committee is being headed by AAIB's deputy director R S Passi, which would submit its report in next six months, as per the government notification.

According to the notification it  appears that it is expedient to investigate and determine the causes and contributory factors leading to the said accident and make recommendations to avoid recurrence of such accidents in future. "In the exercise of the powers, the central  government hereby directs that a formal inquiry in the accident be made,” says the notification.

There were 154 passengers and seven crew members onboard when the Boeing 737 aircraft skidded on the runway, taking a full 360 degree turn on the runaway after which it veered towards the soft land, damaging the landing gear in the convulsive process early morning around 5 am on December 27 last year.

The aircraft's nose cone sat on the grass about 250-300 metres away from the runway, indicating the seriousness of the accident. According to the notification, the committee would also take the assistance of other experts and agencies also.
