KOLKATA: Lord Parshuram, a famous figure in the Hindu mythology had axed his mother Renuka to death on the orders of his father sage Jamadagni.

Fast forward to 2015, a former Calcutta 'A division' footballer hammered his mother to death two years ago for refusing to spare him money for drugs and smeared the blood of his mother on his face and body, saying he was playing 'Holi' with blood. Based on the evidence of 11 persons, including the accused's father Amar Majumdar, 27-year-old Mithun Majumdar was jailed for life by Barasat additional district and sessions judge Anirban Das for the brutal murder of his 42-year-old Dulali Majumdar.

The court pronounced that though the accused deserved to be hanged to death, the punishment has been reduced to a life imprisonment because of the 'young age' of the accused.

After dragging on for two years at Barasat court, the case came to be known popularly as 'Kaliyuga's Parshuram' due to the similarities in the brutal murder of the mother by the son. However, the similarity ends there.

Initially a bright student and a professional footballer, Mithun, the lone child of a wealthy father, had fallen into the trap of drugs -- expensive heroine and cocaine -- in his early twenties. Soon, he gave up on sports and started physically assaulting his parents when they refused to give him money for drugs.

"On March 1, 2015, as I broke open the bolted door of my house, I found my wife lying on the floor in a pool of blood and my son Mithun smearing the blood on his face and body. When I asked what happened, he replied,'I am playing Holi'," businessman Amar Majumdar said.

Before being brought dead to the hospital due to excessive blood loss, Amar Majumdar told that his wife said that Mithun had hit on her head repeatedly with a hammer for refusing to give money for drugs. Kolkata Police had arrested Mithun and booked a case based on his father's complaint.
