Policeman shot dead in Kashmir; LeT militant arrested

SRINAGAR: A policeman was shot dead by suspected militants in Yaripora area of south Kashmir’s Kulgam district on Wednesday while a Lashkar-e-Taiba militant was arrested by security forces from Sopore area of north Kashmir.

A police officer said militants fired towards the policeman at Yaripora area in Kulgam district while he was riding his motorcycle home. “The policeman sustained multiple bullet injuries. He was shifted to a hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead,” he said. The deceased was identified as Gowhar Ahmad Tantray of Kulgam.  He was posted with J&K police’s Special Operations Group.
LeT militant arrested

A police spokesperson said during checking at a checkpost, a person identified as Basit Najar of Sopore was apprehended and a pistol was recovered from him. On questioning, he said that he along with his associate Danish Mantoo of Sopore had joined LeT and were active in the Sopore area, the spokesperson said.

NIA to question separatists
After arresting seven separatists in a terror funding case, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) is likely to question separatist leaders Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz  Umar Farooq and Mohammad Yasin Malik.
Sources said the National Investigation Agency is hopeful that during the 10-day remand of the arrested separatists, it would be able to collect “solid evidence” against Geelani, Mirwaiz and Malik to go after them.

Sources said NIA sleuths will be questioning the arrested separatist leaders about the involvement of Geelani, Mirwaiz and Malik in receiving funds from Pakistan and militant groups for fomenting unrest in the Valley.
