18-year-old girl among two killed in Kashmir

SRINAGAR: Two persons including a girl were killed and another lady injured in militancy violence in Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday while militants attacked the opposition National Conference leader’s residence with a grenade and ransacked the house of a police officer and PDP workers in south Kashmir.

A police official said militants barged into a residential house at Seer Jagir area of Tral in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district today.

He said the militants fired on two women present in the house.

“In the militant firing, an 18-year-old girl identified as Yasmeena was killed and another woman identified as Rubeena injured,” the official said.

The injured woman was shifted to a nearby hospital, where from she was referred to Srinagar hospital for specialised treatment. 

Immediately after the militant attack, police, CRPF and army men launched combing and search operation in the area to track down the militants. However, no arrests were reported.

Police has blamed Jaish-e-Mohammad militant for the killings.

Meanwhile, a militant was killed in a gunfight with security forces in Handwara area of border district of Kupwara today.

Defence spokesman in Srinagar, Colonel Rajesh Kalia said security forces launched an operation against militants in Ananwan village of Kralgund in Kupwara at 5 am.

He said militants fired on the search party during the combing operation.

“The fire was returned by the troops, triggering an encounter. In the brief encounter, the militant was killed,” the official said adding the identity of the slain militant was being ascertained.

Sources said two militants managed to escape from the area during the course of gunfight.

Meanwhile, militants attacked residence of opposition National Conference leader Muhammad Ashraf Bhat at Hamami Mohalla area of Tral in Pulwama district.

The grenade exploded inside the compound of NC leader’s house, causing injury to a CRPF jawan.

The injured jawan identified as SK Naval Ali of 180 bn has been hospitalised.

After the grenade attack, security forces conducted searches in the area. However, no arrests were reported.

The militants ransacked the house of an Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) of police Ghulam Ahmed Bhat at Batagund village of Tral in Pulwama district last night.

Police said some masked militants barged into the house and threatened the family members.

They left the house after ransacking the household goods, they said.

Police sources said the militants also ransacked the houses of two PDP workers in Tral and Shopian area in south Kashmir.

Earlier, militants had attacked the residences of two PDP MLA in Tral and Shopian with grenades last week. Both the legislators escaped unhurt in the militant attacks as they were not present in their houses at the time of grenade attacks.
