23 arrested for killing five in Faridabad

FARIDABAD: Five of a family were allegedly shot dead over a political rivalry at the Palwali village here, following which 23 people were arrested, the police said Tuesday.

Eight people were also injured in the incident on Sunday night, they said, adding that the arrests were made Monday.

The police said 18 of the arrested were produced before a court today which sent sarpanch Dayawati and one of her inlaws Omvati to 14 day judicial custody.

Eleven people were sent to two days and four to four days of police remand, they said.

A minor has been sent to a juvenile home and the main accused, Billu, who is Dayawati's husband and a former sarpanch, and four others could not produced in the court today, the police said.

In the complaint, a member of the victims' family has alleged that the incident took place because they did not support the accused in the sarpanch elections.

Raids are being conducted at various places in Haryana, including Palwal and Gurgaon, to arrest the other accused, the police said.

Police Commissioner Hanif Qureshi had said that an SIT will be formed to probe the case.

The police said that security personnel were deployed in large numbers to thwart any untoward incidents.
