NEW DELHI: After nationwide fast on April 9 to protect communal harmony, the Congress will stage a show of strength against the Modi government by holding a rally in Delhi on April 29.

“We will hold a rally on April 29 in Delhi’s Ramlila ground,” AICC general secretary in charge of Organisation Ashok Gehlot said after chairing a meeting of all general secretaries and state in charges.

“All sections of society are frustrated and there is an atmosphere of fear, hatred and violence all around.” he said.

Re-iterating party chief Rahul Gandhi’s views that he was against politics of hate, Gehlot said the Congress had to represent the concerns of the people.

“We have no personal enmity against anyone. Our fight is only for policies and programmes,” he said.

To support his views, the former Rajasthan chief minister said that even in 1984 when the BJP had just two MPs in the Lok Sabha, the Congress never talked about a BJP-free country. Noting the BJP has been talking about its Congress-free agenda since 2014, he said the RSS recently differed from the view.

“The RSS is working like an extra-constitutional authority. They came to power through falsehood and know that they have been exposed and won’t come back in 2019,” said Gehlot.

Noting that institutions like RBI, CBI and income tax were being misused by the centre, the Congress veteran said that common people were hit by inflation and joblessness, resulting from the false promises made to them in 2014.

Gehlot, who belongs to the OBC category, further said the April 9 fast was in response to the violence that marked the all-India protests against the weakening of the SC/ST law.

“If the government was alert the anti-social elements would not have taken advantage of the situation,” he said.

The Congress leader said that in a democracy only the voters were powerful and decided who will get the chair.
